The Yggdrasil ash is supported by three long roots. These go through three different worlds, and at each root lies a well. One root is with the Æsir. Here lies the well Urdarbrunn, where the Norns reside, and where the Æsir daily keep things. The other root is with the Rimtuss. Here lies Mimesbrunn, which is a source of wit and wisdom, and which is owned by the wise Mime. The third root is in Nivlheim, and here lies the well Kvergjelme. In Kvergjelme lie a multitude of worms, led by the terrible Nidhogg, and gnaw at the root. They thus threaten to destroy the tree.

A variety of creatures live in the branches of Yggdrasil: four deer graze in the treetop, these are called Dåin, Dvalin, Dunøyr and Duratro. There is an eagle (Vidofnir) sitting at the top of the tree, and between its eyes sits the hawk Værfolne. The squirrel Ratatosk runs up and down the trunk and carries gossip and bad words between the eagle Vidofnir and the worm Nidhogg.
