Dragons were often used for decoration. Dragon heads struck people with fear and were therefore the perfect psychological warfare for the Vikings when they went on raids.   The Valknut symbol is often associated with the gods, especially Odin, and it can be depicted with the points facing up or down. Numerous examples of this symbol can be found in Norse image stones and carvings such as those found on the Oseberg ship, a Viking ship that has some of the oldest known examples of this symbol.
