The rune symbol Ægishjálmur from Galdrabók is also called the “helmet of terror”. The rune symbol, which consists of eight Viking Age m-runes or Old Norse r-runes, rotating around a central point, was used for incantations and as protection. It was intended to both create fear in the enemy and strengthen one’s own power. The rune symbol was written with blood or body fluid on the chest, arm or forehead on the inside of the helmet. Even today, there are people who use this magical symbol for protection and to strengthen their own power. Ægishjálmur is also mentioned in even older sources, such as in Fåvnesmál verses 16 and 17. We understand here that Ægishjálmur is a form of protection or secret power
