Odin is the oldest, most powerful and foremost of the Æsir in Norse mythology. He is one-eyed and the wisest of the Æsir after he sacrificed an eye to drink from the jötnen Mime's well of knowledge, which lies at the root of Yggdrasil. Odin lives in Valhalla, and from his high seat he can see everything that happens in the world. Sometimes Odin walks among the people - then he wears a wide-brimmed hat and a blue cloak.

Odin's family
Odin is the son of Bor and the jötunn woman Bestla. Together with his brothers Vile and Ve, he created the world at the dawn of time. He is married to Frigg, who is the most powerful goddess, and has a son, Balder, with her. With the goddess Jord, he has a son, Thor. With Rind, he had Våle, and with Grid, he had Vidar. Other sons are Ty, Brage, and Hod.

Odin's animals and magical objects
Odin uses wine as both food and drink, all other food he gives to the wolves Gere and Freki. The ravens Hugin and Munin usually sit on Odin's shoulders when they are not flying around the world to see what is happening. Sleipnir is Odin's eight-legged horse, which is faster than all other horses.

Odin owns the spear Gungne, which never gets stuck, and the golden ring Draupne, from which eight equally heavy rings drip every ninth night. Both the spear and the ring were made by the dwarves.

God of War
Odin is the god of warriors. He has his valkyries select those who will fall in battle, and welcome them to Valhalla (valr, "the fallen"). There, the dead warriors train every day to be prepared when Ragnarok comes. Then Odin will be devoured by the Fenris wolf, but will be avenged by his son Vidar.

God of sorcery, wisdom and poetry
Odin is also called "the god of the hanged". In Håvamål there is a dark passage where Odin tells that he himself hung on the gallows for nine nights, wounded with a spear and "given to himself". Odin is in general the god of mysticism and witchcraft and at the same time the god of wisdom and divination, runic knowledge and poetry. By seducing Gunnlod, the daughter of the giant Suttung, he obtains the Suttungsmjøden, which gives the gift of poetry.

A god with many names
Odin has a number of names that reflect his qualities, including Allfather, Valfather ("father of the fallen"), Ygg ("the terrible") and Håve ("the high"). His dwelling is called Valaskjalv (Valaskjǫlf), his high seat Lidskjalv (Hliðskjǫlf) and his guildhall Valhall.
