ETYMOLOGY "lodden-brok", or "banner of fate"
ALSO KNOWN AS Ragnarr Loðbrók
The sagas about him and his sons must have begun as early as the 9th century. They flourished in England, Denmark and Iceland during the Middle Ages. The best known is Ragnars saga lóðbrókar, an Icelandic fornaldarsaga, which Saxo also knew and used. It has been handed down in a later form from the end of the 13th century.
Ragnar, wearing his loðbrók, killed the lindworm and won the Tora Borgarhjort; he later married Aslaug (also called Kråka), ravaged England, was captured by King Ella and died in the worm farm. Ragnar's sons avenged him, had blood eagles carved on King Ella's back and won all of England. An Orkney poem, Krákumál, from the 12th century, is put into the mouth of the dying Ragnar.
